Dog Ear Cropping in Littleton, CO
Dr. Lee Bregitzer has had a special interest in treating pets for acute and chronic ear problems and allergies. He has been doing custom ear crops and cosmetic ear surgery for over 30 years. With each ear crop surgery, he will do a complimentary evaluation and consultation.
The optimum age for ear cropping is 9 weeks, depending on breed, but can be done up to 12 weeks.
Dr. Bregitzer does all of his ear crops using a surgical laser. The laser reduces bleeding, swelling, and post-operative pain, and therefore facilitates a quicker recovery. Prior to surgery, all dogs have a pre-anesthetic lab panel run to evaluate internal organ function. All dogs have an IV catheter and IV fluids to help support their cardiovascular system under anesthesia. Under anesthesia, dogs are monitored very closely for safety. We make sure all dogs have appropriate pain management while in the hospital and at home. After surgery, dogs will stay overnight so they can be monitored by our overnight veterinarian. When dogs go home, they will have a special ear support wrap that will be changed weekly. Dogs will need to return weekly to have their wrap changed and ears evaluated. Most dogs will need to have their ears wrapped for a total of 3 weeks. Most dogs end up needing to wear an e-collar ('cone of shame') to keep them from rubbing at their ears. It is extremely important to keep dogs from damaging their ears at home.
